How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsNice printer - better than inkjet
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 11 October 2018
I did a few calcs before buying it and the price per page is looking very good, especially when paired with replacement toner from some lesser known manufacturers. It comes with toner though, and instructions, CD's, power lead, etc, but I've got it set up wirelessly.

The wireless setup was actually much easier than equivalent printers, as some I've used in the past need you to connect to a PC first, then move to wireless, but you can do it all wirelessly from the off. The only slight downside I have is the software and drivers that come with it are a little limited, so you can perhaps print in normal or fine mode, and I did spot toner saver, but you can't (for example) set multiple photos to print on a single page, or half the page in colour, half in mono, etc. Lots of settings that I've seen in more expensive printers just aren't there, but it is actually a budget printer.

It's worth working out how many pages you'll expect to print before buying printers such as these, and I got the printer and a spare set of toners (extra from different supplier) and I expect this to last me around 6 months - not bad for what will be around 25 pounds a month, even if it gives up the ghost after that.

Print quality is good, but depends a great deal on the paper. However, on budget paper, it's quite acceptable and much better than inkjet, with no banding or noticeable artifacts in the print quality. Definitely worth it, but please have someone there to help you carry it, as it is MUCH bigger and heavier than I expected. (If this review is helpful, please give me a thumbs up, as it's nice to know I'm not just writing these for my finger exercises!)

1.0 out of 5 starsAfter having this machine for a little over a week ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 11 August 2017
After having this machine for a little over a week it started to squeal so loud every time a sheet of paper came out. After about a month of that god awful noise I got a hold of tech support and worked out a deal with them to have it repaired at a local shop. They had the machine for 6 weeks and I was without a printer that whole time. When I FINALLY got it back it worked properly for 2 days and then the noise was back. I immediately got back with tech support and arranged for a refurbished one to be sent to me and I would then have 5 days to send my old one back. The refurbished one is now constantly "cooling down" and won't print when it is doing this. The air vent is not blocked and it doesn't feel or smell hot. I have had the refurbished one for roughly 2 months now and it is making the same squealing noise that the first one made. I just don't think this machine is meant for the high volume printing that I do every day as our office has several of the same machines without problems.
It goes to "sleep" continually, no matter how you set it, then you have to get up and restart it. I've spent over an hour on the phone with the support trying to get it fixed. It worked ok and lasted 2 days, then back to the way it was.
dont forget, it does NOT run two sided copies, that's a big problem and always having to take way too much time to reload the paper and being ALWAYS having to worry will it print on the proper side of the paper or on top of the one I just printed and destroy everything, especially when you have very little time to spare before an important meeting.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worked OK for 3 years, but with network issues
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 7 October 2020

Fine for what our household needed it for. Toners lasted a decent amount of time. For some reason have always had issues connecting to my network. Not a huge problem and rarely do wireless printing or print from other PC's.
Reason for my review now is the flipping waste toner cartridge! Had the error appear 2 days ago. Ordered a brand new OEM part from Amazon. 5 min job to replace. Still same issue. Tried about 6 times (printer on and also off) and still same issue. Brother online chat were about as helpful as an ashtray on a motorbike! Pointed me to my local service centre. But they are shut because of COVID! Watched a couple of YouTube fixes, none worked for me. So I have a perfectly good printer that stopped working because a consumable part needed replacing, replaced and still not working! Grrrrrrrrr!

Edit: got it working! Decided to have another attempt. Watched another YouTube video and this one worked. Had to have the waste toner box in the printer (with it on), remove small plastic cover plate and twist the reset dial with a screwdriver!?!? What an absolute pain in the rear, but at least it’s working.

This printer is aggravating. The search for SSID that occurs every time you turn the printer on the long delay to reach ready state; then nothing! You try pausing and ready, turning on the menu. A minute later if I'm lucky a page will slowly heave it's way into the print. All the time, the printer is printing as far as the windows 10 pc is concerned. It's unusable, so DON'T BUY.
The components that let it down are 64mb non upgradable memory, and no ethernet card. The WiFi isnt AC, so works only on 2.4 mhz channels. If it fails to print, it's because my phone or pc is using 5mhz channels.

Despite this the printer manages small print jobs with accuracy and speed. I can print from my phone and iPad with iPrint&Scan, and set it up on windows 10 pc.

The construction is excellent with good build quality and a smooth paper path. The driver CD is so far out of date it was last updated for vista.
Lucky that the brother site has windows 10 driver package.

Once that was installed printing became accurate and quick, with silent sleep state.

My last printer, brother HL-3040CN, had upgradable memory, ethernet card, but even with 512mb memory was far slower and very noisy in sleep mode. Hence why I swapped out one well performing printer for another.

It suits my needs, now that I often prefer to print from my phone on the same network, rather than fire up my pc. But if you need a small office machine try a brother printer that offers upgradable memory instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars INSTALLATION HELL.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 19 August 2017

Installation on a WLAN using Win 10.
I go back as far as the time when one had to set interrupts for serial printers... I've probably installed over 50 printers in the last 30+ years. I spent 10 years as part of a team designing and implementing complex custom software and ensuring that the user interface was understandable to non-technical operators. This POS really deserves zero stars. Everything about the installation is a total mess - the documentation, software, user interface, everything. To take one example of a vast number - and I don't have the energy to write them all up having just wasted 2 hours failing to activate the wireless function - even the driver installer isn't signed properly, it's not recognised as a Brother product. How a company this size can be releasing something so fundamentally flawed, is almost - almost - unbelievable.
If I felt less tired and infuriated to discover software this appallingly executed after decades of availability of consumer level IT equipment I'd write the whole rat's nest up. Maybe I will at some point. Meanwhile, this printer is utterly useless to me without the wireless facility and I'm faced with the hassle of returning it or else battling my way though a diagnosis of the problem. I'm old and tired and sick of this nonsense.
Brother corp: your software interface design team shouldn't just be fired - they should be shot.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish printer - waste massive amounts of toner
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 10 October 2016
Verified Purchase
I've now had two of these printers which are absolutely useless. The print quality is pretty good BUT it's slow, pauses to 'cool down' even if you're just printing 20 pages. If you print several documents at once, it's liable to miss pages. If you print several pages it will chop the top and bottom off (if you print it a single sheets you get all the page). The BIGGEST PROBLEM is that it tells you that it is out of toner when it isn't! This morning I printed about 40 pages in monochrome, then it stopped and complained that the YELLOW cartridge needed replacing and refused to go any further. Strange because last time I checked the toner levels (and I haven't done any coloured printing since) there was over 40% left for all three colour toners. When I replaced the toner with the yellow from the other printer (hardly used) it still said that the toner was low! OK it's a cheap printer but it's just rubbish. The problem is that printer software doesn't allow the printer to continue if one toner is low - i.e. even if you're only printing in monochrome, the printer won't work if it detects one of the colour toners is low (whether it is or not) which means that you can never use all the toner in a cartridge - maybe 30%-40% is wasted!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed lacks BASIC functionality
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 20 December 2014

Disappointed lacks the basic functionality that experienced users expect in a quality printer 2014. Doesn't even do double sided without manually putting sheets back in the paper tray. Like going back to 1994! I think Brother are stuck in the stone age with this printer.
Had it while now - even worse than not doing double sided it will not always wake-up when I sent print jobs to it in WiFi mode!. It just sits there inert. I have to shut it down and restart it to get the printer found by the computer agin (after a prolonged lack of use - 2 or 3 days) and sometimes its still doesn't work!!!! It only works instantly if it is connected through the USB port. How quint! A USB printer with WiFi that sometimes works but mostly don't in 2015!
Rubbish machine!!! Wish I could give minus stars.
It's not just me that thinks its rubbish:
[...]

Our Verdict: This entry-level laser-class printer is fast for its class, but its cost per page and certain feature omissions make its slightly costlier sibling, the HL-3170CDW, a better deal.

High cost per page
Old-school control panel
No automatic duplexing
Limited support for wireless devices, cloud sites
Bulky for an LED printer

Another year on - still rubbish, bought toner cartridges for it - original cartridges - not cheap clones - they don't work. Just keeps on complaining about the yellow cartridge being empty even though its brand new and tested as being full.

1.0 out of 5 stars Prints.... When you can persuade it to....
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 14 October 2015
Verified Purchase
What you want from a network printer is for it to just work... You want it to behave such that you hardly notice it's there. Unfortunately, this doesn't. When it prints it's fine. It's just that getting it to do so is an exercise in frustration and futility...

Really basic stuff unfortunately. But the accursed thing just seems to decide when it wants to connect, be visible on the network...etc. It then goes to sleep, won't wake up...
Have been battling with it for six months and sadly enough I do know what I'm doing. It constantly disappears, can't connect and then occasioanlly just works, just to be annoying. If you're using a Mac, certainly don't touch it. though it is just as flakey on the wife's windows machine.

Regardless of that, the interface (and I've been seeing quite a lot of it) is pretty poorly designed. There doesn't seem to be any logic behind the menu configuration.. e.g. you can fart about with network configuration all you like, but there is no option for 'Wake up and print' or 'Stay awake'

I'd recommend trying some other manufacturer (though from experience no guarantees there...)

1.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE CON
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 15 February 2017
Verified Purchase
It prints well, and prints quickly but it's programmed to be an absolute con! Every 300-400 pages it decides that it has run out of ink and insists that a new ink drum is provided. I have to manually reset each time this happens. I've had to reset the first drum four times now and there isn't even a hint so far of the ink running out. On top of that, I've only printed in black so far but every-time it's also told me I need to replace the colour drums - despite them not even being used.
It's got a second trick too - if you don't use the slider on the drum it starts to print lines on your pages - usually in a colour that you haven't even asked for and this morning it decided it wanted all the sliders used anyway, so refused to do any printing until I did this.

The printed pages are clear and concise, but it's programming is abysmal, and for that it loses four stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with the way the unit was supplied by Amazon/Brother, 7 Mar. 2015

Debster
Excellent printer and set up in 5 minutes after I found an old power lead - The same story as Debsters below....
This review is from: Brother HL3140CW A4 Colour Laser Wireless Printer (Accessory)
Received this item from Amazon today - Unfortunately all the instruction manuals supplied with the unit - including the quick start guide were in every other language but English. The unit was supplied with a standard "kettle" lead fitted with a european plus. This was accompanied by a lead in the box - that was obviously intended to be used with UK sockets, the 13amp plug was good, but the other end intended to go in the printer was a two pin, incompatible with the printer supplied. Fortunately I was able to down load the correct instruction manual in English from the web site, and have used the "kettle" plug off my old printer to get this up and running. Having said all that, the printer was extremely easy to set up and the print quality is good.
