I'm a fan of Simaks writing and I am still finding works that I haven't read before. This was one of them. Although not his best by far it is an acceptable tale with a largely uninspired storyline and rather flat characters. It includes some recognizable elements from well known fairy tales but the Brothers Grimm did it far better.
Simak's well into his "travelling band" genre at this stage. The story follows a group, each with different skills but are all sufficiently human to be clearly describing you and me in different circumstances. It's a joy to whip though this novel, and I really can recommend it as a part of reading all of Simak's work.
