I had a VHS of this 'Nozze' from the reopening of Glyndebourne, and found mich to admire and enjoy. Superb conducting, a good cast especially Finley and Hagley , and was greatly looking forward to reassessing it. But th elevel of sound is atrocious. I'm hard of hearing, but usually have no problem with music, opera merely requires a slightly higher volume setting. For this disc, the volume was trned up to unusual levels, my hearing aids inserted, and I was still straining to hear. Really, this won't do' This disc was not fit for purpose, and ought not to be sold.

Haitink conducts the masterpiece in a way which leaves you in no doubt why this timeless classic is a masterpiece. Sung wonderfully, with particular credit going to Marie-Ange Todorovitch's portrayal of Cherubino. Though we may complain so and so sung it better than her, dramatically Todorovitch incredibly pleasant to watch, very charming indeed. Renee Flemming gives a heart warming performance; she is amazing, as she usually is.

Now to the not so great bits. The staging is a bit dreary. Though it's adequate, that's about it. It's not very exciting or visually attractive and not very noteworthy.

The recording itself is the biggest let down. Not the greatest sound or recording quality with a few fuzzy and slightly muffled (though very few) bits. Perhaps if it was on VHS you would/could forgive the bad recording and sound quality but for a DVD it has no excuse. This makes me wonder why the DVD is double sided.

This is a great performance and i loved watching it. I just wish the recording was better and it would've gotten five stars in a heartbeat. Shame such magnificent artistry it let down by a few recording issues. Nevertheless for the £11/12 i would definitely recommend it.

I find this an exceptional production of Figaro, both intimate and full of life and humour. Gerald Finlay is outstanding in the title role, his combination of charm and confidence perfectly offsetting the Count's devious and troubled manner. Alison Hagley is also excellent as Susanna both in her singing and in the liveliness she brings to the role. The satirical libretto is of course the dominating feature of the opera so perhaps it lacks some of the continuously sublime music in Cosi, the Flute or Clemenza. However, Renee Fleming treats us to a beautiful 'Dov'e Sono' and I find all the supporting roles very well done.
The quality of the sound and film are good.
Thoroughly recommended.

DVD of this performance of Nozze di Figaro if you can't afford to go to Glyndebourne. Or even if you can.

Loved every moment of this opera. Figaro (Gerald Finley) is very well cast, and I just loved Cherubino (Marie-Ange Todorovitch). The music under the direction of Bernard Haitink is superb. I shouldn't mention just 2 stars when the whole cast is wonderful. Well done Glyndbourne Festival Opera.

I love this version. I now have four versions of this opera and they all have something to commend them. The staging is simple but effective.
