I selected this book on the strength of its promise of aerial action adventure and as the book unfolded I wasn't let down. What a cracking thriller from this author.

Plenty action and intense aerial fights that blazed across the frozen wastes of Siberia with an added bonus of a tense drama that lurked beneath the waves. In the shape of a forgotten russian submarine from the Cold War era getting caught up in a Pacific version of 'Das Boot'.

As the book drew to a close all the story threads added up to a great explosive conclusion along with a very intense aerial action twist that was exciting and intense.

I enjoyed this book and will look for more efforts from this author.

Surprisingly for an author that shows America to be near invincible he also shows that no matter how much they contribute, they can loose out. It would of course. Be a disaster if the Japanese invaded Russia and both nuked each other luckily, it won't happen. Russia hasn't after all, got rid of its nukes.

It's a shame that Cassidy and Elitch didn't get together as it could have worked and, what happened to Jiro after capture. The ending is good if a little too quick.

Enjoyed this story even if it was a bit far fetched in places. Aerial combat scenes were described in an exciting manner and conveyed the speed and terror of supersonic encounters. The submarine episodes were also well written and I thought the claustraphobia and filfth of life on board a fighting outdated submarine was really well described.

Stephen Coonts writes a good yarn! If you want a book that is easy to read yet compelling, Stephen Coonts is your man. This story blends reality with a bit of "sci-fi", it gets the reader believing the story even though some of it is a bit far fetched. It's easy to read but has some good technical descriptions that fit in with the scenario. Typical Stephen Coonts book, well worth the read.

This is an excellent thriller with aerial conflict involving the Japanese, Russians and the Americans. It high lights the dangers of an escalating nuclear threat and the use of even conventional submarines. Most enjoyable.

If you want to know what it is like to fly the F22 Raptor this book is for you. Coonts bases the story, as always on possible events. The flying sections are superb. No Jake Grafton this time but some good new characters.

Fast paced, engaging, I could not put this one down. Anyone with an interest in military aviation, how it feels to fly or just a love of fast paced action books will be thrilled by Fortunes of War.

This is another superb book that will keep you gripped from beginning to end. For people who have read other Coonts books this is a bit of a break as Jake Grafton does not feature at all. Instead we are introduced to a whole new range of characters on both sides of a conflict between Japan and Russia, set early in the next century.
As with most of his books it is full of the latest technology with graphic flying scenes, if you like flying and technothrillers, get it!

Purchased for my brother who is a heavy consumer of historical fiction and modern day thrillers. He enjoyed it very much and would recommend it to readers of similar preferances.
