as someone who doesn't like ambient music, i absolutely love this album.
Richard D James is a musical genius (or madman? possibly both) and manages to make the dull (imo) genre of ambient enthralling and incredibly energetic and enjoyable. this may still be aphex twin's most accessible release (even Syro is 'harder' to listen to than this) and i imagine it appeals to a vast majority of people whether they are aphex twin fans, ambient fans, or neither.
highly recommended addition to any electronic music fan's collection, and that goes double for fans (old and new alike) of RDJ

I won't say much about the music itself, other than the fact that two+ decades haven't diminished its brilliance; still an essential title in any electronic music collection. What I will try to review, however, is the 2013 vinyl edition that I purchased from Amazon UK. Since this is an official reissue, you will get the original iconic artwork on the cover, and not that hideous trashy-3D-horse image that appeared on a bootleg release from a few years back. The cover is a bit flimsy and not a gatefold, but from what I gather this was also the case with the first pressing. The record itself is well pressed, on two 150g slabs of vinyl, with no audible surface noise. Though there's no info on whether the same stamper from the last official (remastered) reissue in 2006 was used or not, the sound quality is great, with a quite decent dynamic range. (Of course, the fact that this album is practically a collection of home recordings--and, if AllMusic's story is to be believed, one that survived maulings by a cat--should already warn you not to expect an audiophile-level of sound quality. All in all, this is a highly recommended edition of an indispensable album. Get it before it goes out of print (again).

This is good stuff. Oddly enough I don't like the even numbered tracks, finding them boring but the odd numbered tracks are brilliant, with a wonderful repetitive drum beat. The odd numbered tracks on their own are enough to give this five stars.

A great album if you would like to listen to something a little different. I love Schottkey 7th path which used to have a great video on MTV and can understand the lengths the chap went to to make sure it sounded just right by listening to it myself. If you have any interest in music production have a read up on him as it is very interesting. Polygon windows(surfing sine waves) is also worth a listen aswell if you would like to venture of the beaten track a bit with electronic music.

Richard does what Richard does best: he makes music you know could not have come from anyone else. Some tracks show their age in terms of technology, but they will always have a resurgence when the nostalgia value blows the dust off again. Otherwise RDJ shows himself as the genius composer he is.
