This three CD set contains the first four studio albums by Solution (Solution, Divergence, Cordon Bleu and Fully Interlocking) plus six live recordings from 1971 and five single versions. Tastefully remastered, and with a booklet full of photos and sleevenotes, this is easy to recommend to those interested - but it does have some idiosyncracies.
For a start, the four albums are presented out of sequence - not a problem for Solution and Cordon Bleu, which appear in their entirety on a disc each, but in the case of Divergence and Fully Interlocking, they're spread over two, which means you won't hear them as nature intended. Still, in this age of ripping to FLAC, it's not a huge problem for the purist.
The best things on this release are the six live tracks, recorded for a Dutch TV show called Campus - they sound great, and the playing is muscular and spirited. Interestingly they feature Guus Willemse, who had just joined the group. Also of note are the single versions: the three ones from Fully Interlocking are straightforward edits, but the versions of Divergence and Chappaqua are totally different re-recordings. Wonderful to hear.
The packaging features a distinctive concept (a speaker world above the clouds), but is a bit incongruous compared to Solution's original artwork, which had a more gritty, tactile feel (a canal; stark puppets; a butterfly on a hob; linked hands above a grubby landscape). Mythology appears to be a generic series title, rather than anything evocotive of the band. Nevertheless, it's fantastic to see Solution accorded some attention, and in this substantial collection you get everything they did in the '70s in one fell swoop.
Solution's first three albums were some of the best to come out of the Netherlands in the 70s..Here they are plus the fourth album and rarities and live material. The other good news is that all the music has been remastered from the original analog tapes, therefore the sound is superior to the Esoteric reissues. The packaging is not that attractive, sadly but the notes are informative. This album is very recommended and even moreso than the Esoteric versions due to the amazing sound...Don't delay!
