The title of this collection is misleading; they are not by any means all colour paintings. Many of them are black and white drawings. Of course, there are still many fine colour paintings included, but the title does seem a little disingenuous. Shishkin is all about trees, and there is much to enjoy here, particularly those depicting woodland in its natural state; e.g. Backwood 1872, and Birch Grove 1875. I have no interest in the paintings of people and buildings, or the black and white drawings. All in all, a collection of moderate interest, not to be compared to Volkov or Levitan.
I absolutely love Shishkin's trees and his mastery of the countryside and forests. I already had a book showing his colour plates but enjoy the seeing the pictures on my IPad where the colours and detail stand out beautifully.
A wonderful way to view hundreds of paintings and sketches by this wonderful landscape artist and all for less than the price of a cup of coffee. A welcome feature is being able to enlarge the images for a closer study
