This is a book about the daily lives of ouir armed forces who spent many days incarcerated behind barbed wire during the second world war.
What it must be like to have to loose your freedom for many years.
They planed and and used their skills into how they were going to escape from this type of camp.
They became experts as they pooled their talents into making things.
They had a desire to get out and some of them did which spurred everyone on to achieve it themselves.

Read PR Reid's Colditz books instead. They are far more comprehensive and readable.
