A very interesting account of the goings on in a brothel at the end of the Shogunate period. You can sense that the actors have done this sort of thing before, on the stage. Very entertaining and funny and no salaciousness. I agree with other reviewers that this film should be considered one of best films to come our of Japanese film studios and is a deep insight into the japanese character.

I love watching something different, and you can't beat a good foreign film. This was quite a lengthy film, and like a lot of subtitled films it took a short while to get settled into following the subtitles and seeing the film itself at the same time. In it's own way, it is subtly humourous, and keeps you watching to the end. The quality of the Blu-ray reproduction for such an old film was perfectly good. Would certainly recommend it to anyone who likes to watch something different.

It's good to be reminded that traditional Japanese culture is by no means limited to samurai and Zen.

There is a tradition, equally venerable, of low comedy and slapstick, and clever double acts and stand-up comics (who sit down, but that's Japan ...)

The hero of this very lively romp, set in a traditional Japanese brothel, is a conman of genius, whose sheer effrontery carries all before him on the rare occasions when his wits alone don't suffice.

What Kyōgen is to Nō, this film is to (say) Seven Samurai ...
