This is a brilliant way to get 8 of olivers late 50's early 60's classics in a neat 4 cd package.
You get what you pay for with these Real Gone sets with no liner notes or even recording or production credits. You do get personel who played on each album though.
A word on sound quality. I've picked up 4 of these sets over the last few months and not one of them has disapointed in the sound stakes. I compared the one cd i already had (Blues and the Abstract Truth) with the Real Gone version and i coudn't tell the differance. I mean there was no differance at all. I suspect Real Gone have just duplicated an earlier issue for each album. Most of these albums came out on either the OJC label or Impulse and if they are these masterings then theres nothing to worry about. I certainly have no complaints with the sets i've bought which come from the late 50's early 60's period. Perhaps some of the earlier sourced stuff might be more vairiable in sound quality.
If your not to bothered about the cheap packaging then buy with confidence.

Nelson,Oliver - Eight Classic Albums has 48 tracks on four CDs.

The Real Gone Jazz label has garnered some really good reviews for sound quality.
The digitally enhanced sound is a good indicator but for a proper review I really suggest you read other, more knowledgeable people's reviews.
My Co- reviewer Mr I Ward rates this enhanced sound as great.
The collection is on 4 CDs encased in a double wide jewel case.
But Amazon have not posted a track listing so this info might be of interest to the potential buyer?

The albums are
Meet Over Nelson,
Soul Battle,
Taking Care Of Business,
Main Stem,
Screamin' The Blues,
The Blues And Abstract Truth,

Streets Ahead

The Tracks Are.
(if anyone can advise the split over the 4 CDs I would be grateful.
Just add a comment and I will adjust and credit you with the info).

I'm a sucker for a bargain, and with just one look at the price and I had to have this compilation even though I already had three of the albums. Nelson is a fine arranger, composer and an fine alto and tenor player with a distinctive sound. The musicians he employed here are a who's-who of the 1960's and he was a great loss to jazz when he died of a heart attack, aged 43, in1975.

This has all you want if you after one set of Oliver Nelsons recordings. im still
working my way through this collection but so far have found it really enjoyable
the two major sessions for me were screaming the blues and the ever brilliant
blues and the abstract truth both here. Well recommended

This was a revelation. Particularly so 'Screaming the Blues'. Why hadn't I listened to more of Oliver Nelson's music earlier?

Good to have eight Oliver Nelson's albums in 4 cds, some are pretty hard to find. Blues and Abstract Truth is a classic that every jazz lover should own. It's also in this box set.

What a fine saxophone player he was and all these albums are very fine jazz. I didn't expect to enjoy all eight albums
but they are all foot tapping and swinging with plenty of diversity.
