There's quite a glut of 'classic album' collections to be had these days for excellent prices. Most of them come in basic cardboard covers, so I was pleasantly surprised when this arrived in a full blown 4 CD jewel case (2 albums per CD). The only slight gripe about the packaging is the dearth of 'sleeve notes' but with the amount of information about Dizzy Gillespie available on the Internet, that's hardly an issue. Mr. Glenn Cook mentions there is no album break track listing but I have a complete details on my copy - maybe the packaging has changed since April? His listing of 55 tracks is spot on (and has now been added to the Track Listing description on Amazon) but I can add the album breaks
Disc One - tracks 1 - 6 from Bird & Diz (1950) tracks 7 - 14 from Have trumpet will excite (1959) Disc Two - tracks 1 - 7 from Afro (1954) tracks 8 - 11 from Sonny side up (1957) Disc Three - tracks 1 - 10 from Dizzy in Greece (1957) tracks 11 - 16 from Perceptions (1961) Disc Four - tracks 1 - 10 from Birk's works (1958) tracks 11 - 14 from Duets [with Sonny Rollins & Sonny Stitt] (1957)
The music itself is quite superb and they've done a fine job of the remastering. Complete and utter bargain - just buy it before they spot that £8.99 is far too low a price!
