There is no doubt in my mind when I say that Sidney Poitier is one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. It is perhaps then no wonder that in the staring role of this extremely powerful and though provoking film, Poitier delivers a faultless performance.
Poitier comes face to face with a corrupt and racist police force in the path of solving a brutal murder in a small community that is, shall we say, a little "unfriendly" towards those of a different racial background...
This film has quite simply some of the greatest, most thought provoiking schenes of all time. In The Heat Of The Night skillfully combines the contorvesy and violence of racism with the fast - paced excitement of a modern day thriller.
To put it another way, In The Heat Of The Night is a film you will never forget...

THIS MOVIE IS WHAT GOT ME INTERESTED IN SIDNEY POITIER AND MR TIBBS WHO HE PLAYS TO PERFECTION IN THIS MOVIE. BEING A BLACK MAN IN THE SOUTHERN STATES OF AMERICA WAS NOT AN EASY LIFE TO LIVE, BUT BEING A BLACK COP STILL GOT YOU PROBLEMS.A MUST WATCH MOVIE WITH THE INTRO SONG SUNG BY THE GENIUS THAT IS RAY CHARLES. I HAVE NEVER GOT TIRED OF WATCHING THIS WONDERFUL MOVIE AND A GREAT SUPPORTING CAST AS WELL WITH ROD STEIGER AS THE RACEIST POLICEMAN.

IMHO this is one the best films ever made. Fantastic story that examines all sorts of attitudes that were prevalent in the southern states of the US in the late sixties, many of which haven't disappeared today. Incredibly atmospheric movie with excellent performances by Sidney Poitier and particularly Rod Stieger, excellent sound track by Quincy Jones and the theme sung by Ray Charles.

100% brilliant.

I re-watch this time and time again, just to see [mainly] the superb Rod Steiger. Theres a moment, early on, where police chief Steiger realises, face to face with Poitier, who is his primary and only suspect; that he is in reality confronting an innocent police officer.
Just watch Rod Steiger's expression change .... extraordinary acting and faultless direction.
A fabulous film, very much of its time [the late 1960s] and yet somehow not dated at all.

I saw this film when it was first released and it is still one of my favourite films of all time. Sidney poitier is great in it, but Rod Steiger is even better.
It really conveys the racial tensions of the deep south in America during the 60's. Absolutely not to be missed. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

This is a film which shows us some great truths about humanity and in particularly does not hold back when it comes to showing discrimination on all sides. Pottier as the skilled homicide detective mistaken for a murderer is excellent and his relationship with the Sheriff is perfect. Much recommended.

Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier give masterly performances in film full of southern USA racial tension. The story line is a simple case of mugging and murder with a few twists and turns. An exhibition of racial bigotry where, in the end, the bigots have to admit that their attitude is grotesque.

You can feel the heat in this small town from the opening credits. The dislike between the Sheriff, Steiger, and the professional murder investigator, Poitier, from the North keeps the tension through the whole film. It is also timeless, it could have been made yesterday. Perfect in every way.
