Could have been better
on 25 March 2013
I love a story where you're simply immersed immediately into the characters world and you're left to slowly understand exactly what's going on, this book seemed to offer that from the get go. You're thundering along wondering what's coming next but then about half way through almost the entire premise of the story is blown wide open and plot slams headlong into a solid, brick wall! Ah well there has to be more coming if the author has given so much already but sadly this is not the case. After the halfway point the story just meanders along at a snail's pace until the rather disappointing denouement.
I have the feeling that the story was rushed, that the author had a really stunning idea, and it is a great idea for a story but somehow ran out of steam half way through. The character exploration is very sketchy at first, which is fine if that's how it's to be but then later part is page after page of how the main two or three characters feel about each other. Finally the last 5% of the books is drawing things to a rather rapid, rushed and unsatisfactory end for me.
Disappointing is probably too stronger a word but having hit the halfway point so quickly you do feel as though it could have been better given more time to balance out the story. If you'd like to dabble on the edges of the horror genre without getting knee deep in blood and guts, this would probably be perfect. If you're after something a little more, then it's probably not your cup of tea.
3/5 for a superb idea that starts of brilliantly, knocked off 2 points for giving it away too early and leaving the story to wither on the vine.
