The playing is exquisite & technically brilliant and outstanding musicianship. My only criticism is that the recording is quite quiet, turning the volume up also increases the volume of the musician breathing as he plays which is quite noticable & becomes distracting. I have other lute music recordings in which the breathing of the artist is not noticable, so should be possible to re-mix this album & elimate the sound of breathing. If this was done I would award this album five stars without hesitation. The current recording distracts from the mastery of this player.
Absolutely delightful. O'Dette's playing is clean and engaging. While the music explores a wide range of emotions the instrument's technical possibilities are developed in a manner few other lutenists of the period were able to do. As for the sound engineering, perhaps this could have been slightly better. Nevertheless, an excellent recording; you will not be disappointed!
I am a big fan of O'Dette's Dowland and was excited to get his version of one of Dowland's masters - Il Divino. I found both the music (despite its extravagant write-up in the notes) and the sound production very, very disappointing.
