Hurry Up We're Dreaming.
on 9 August 2017
Like many other reviewers, I bought this CD on the back of the popular BBC Versailles TV series, where I had enjoyed the haunting atmospheric theme tune to the show 'Outro' by M83. I must admit that prior to the TV series I'd never heard of M83 who I learned is a French electronic music group currently based in Los Angeles. The band's sole official member is vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer Anthony Gonzalez.
The band has released seven albums and two soundtracks. The band's musical aesthetic is characterized by extensive use of reverb effects and lyrics spoken softly over loud instruments giving their music an ethereal dream like quality. Gonzalez described this 2011 double album ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’ as a mix between synthpop and ambient; apparently, the album uses instruments not found on previous M83 albums, such as acoustic guitar, flute, and saxophone. Critics have noted musical influences from 80’s artists such as Kraftwerk and Simple Minds.
For me, this album is certainly innovative, even avant-garde, but it’s very much a mixed bag, some songs I like, while others I just can’t warm too, no matter how much I listen to them.
