Too rarely , a voice shines as a diamond in the rough. Laura singing 'Sing To The Moon' at the Urban Prom with the BBC Symphony last week was one of the standout moments of the season in any genre. Vocally she reminds me of Mama Cass and Karen Carpenter, with a Manucunian(?) directness that you need to get your head around. At first listen some ofthe lyrics seem over-simplified,wheras she could deliver a Joni Mitchell line with confidence and commitment. She's served by brilliant arranger/s and being 'classically-trained', knows how to relate to a chart. Major, major talent too strong for the moronic clutches of Cowelldom.
