This book was the only real bargain I have ever purchased in a book sale...50p..but It is so full of intrigue and wonder that even at the high kindle price it's worth it! Thomas Hoving became immersed in all things Tutankhamun while preparing his US museum for the touring exhibit. After immersing himself in records from the dig, he started to work out that the accounts didn't quite add up.....plus who would calmly discover a stiffs and goodies rich ttomb (that's the technical term from my archaeology degree, by he way) and close it up and wait until morning? Naah...there's scandal, there's intrigue....who needs ancient tomb robbers when the moderns are just as adept...feeding rival museums. Even so, Howard Carter comes through as a really intelligent and diligent arcaeologist. And ultimately climatic polution and leaking toilets have trashed most of these wonderful tombs (see John Romer), thumping good read.
I really enjoyed this book. Well written and informative. Told so many unknown facets of the discovery of the tomb and gave a tremendous insight on the actions of Howard Carter and all those involved. Great read and well written.
