Battery cover dropping off on first use.
on 14 February 2016
I was sick of using the proper PS3 controller as I mainly only use it to watch Netflix on my "dumb" Samsung UE46EH5000 TV. The constant screen nags about charging the controller finally pursuaded me that there must be a remote you can buy that would replace it. And this is it! Unlike simpler non sony devices this can also remotely turn on and off the PS3. And it has the added functionality to control other components like your TV and soundbars etc. I had a few problems setting it up to work on my TV (the code turned out to be 464 for mine) mainly because I misread which buttons are pressed in order to enter the relevant code.
To clarify you must press and hold the "device" button (ie the grey "tv" button 2nd down from the top right) and then press the DOT button located underneath the "7" button. You then have 30 seconds to put in the 3 digit code, press Enter to finish. Repeat with other codes if necessary.
I could not get the BD remote to operate my ancient Sharp cinema sound system but according to other reviews the BD remote will only operate Sony amps / soundbars. There is supposedly a way to manually search for the right code by entering a mode in which you advance through available channels until you hit on the right one but despite numerous attempts I gave up on this.
There are far too many buttons for my liking. I would have preferred a much simpler device. My main concern is the build quality. As others have pointed out it has a cheap plastic feel to it and because of all the mainly extraneous buttons its about a third the size more than it needs to be. This makes is a little awkward to use one handed especially at night. A back light option would be great..... But as another customer mentioned the battery cover is very loose and I've only had the thing for an hour. I suspect I may have to return it as I dont like the idea of having to tape up my brand new toy.
Otherwise, considering what this thing does in terms of operating my PS3 for Netflix and other apps, whilst allowing me to simultaneously ditch the proper tv remote and the nagging PS3 controller, it's invaluable!
