StarPAD 9 Android 4.1 16GB WiFi only - a good buy
on 2 September 2013
This is a great tablet, but with a few reservations.
I have had it a few weeks and so have a reasonable appreciation of its capabilities.
I was somewhat miffed that the price increased by £10 whilst I was in the process of purchasing.
A very speedy delivery ensued, (although left outside the side door), the device being impressively packed in a presentation box. The manual is a new one and actually well written, illustrated and comprehensive. Unfortunately diagrams of connector positions do not correspond to StarPAD 9. It's worth watching the amateur "youtube" StarPAD video instructions otherwise I wouldn't know how to charge the Bluetooth keyboard.
Be aware that for about £30 more there is a later StarPAD 9SE version that has different keyboard & features etc and maybe worthy of consideration.
My main disappointment was that the StarPAD9 failed to pick up the WiFi signal where my phone; my 3DSXL; and X-box could manage. A replacement router with all 3 freq. bands made no difference until relocated to a more advantageous position.
The leather case is fine for carrying outside particularly if you need the keyboard, or want to watch video on a safely propped-up screen. but for general indoor use (especially apps games) the tablet is left unprotected for convenience reasons. I cannot find a suitable alternative cover other than a low cost slip-on one that's good but has no provision for recharging (I could cut a hole I suppose!). The StarPAD 9 frequently requires recharging, and as everyone says, the charger lead is too short, plus I would add the connector plug is rather fragile.
Also the short adapter lead with mini USB connector as supplied was both fragile and intermittent and had to be replaced.
The screen is effective and has a reasonable viewing angle although not as much as described by one reviewer. Touch sensitivity is good. Live TV works well despite having non-optical cable in our area.
Speakers are quieter than my phone and could be better, but with earphones supplied or via an external amplifier (can be Bluetooth) i'm sure sound would be very good.
I was impressed with the software photo-editing capability.
Camera is ok but is limited without flash and medium resolution. Good illumination of subject will help.
Notwithstanding, my wife and I are really enjoying the impressive capabilities such that we would not want to part with it.
