This is her first two albums, Sweet England (1959) and False True Lovers (1960) plus four extra songs.

Simple, charming arrangements of mainly English folk songs mostly accompanied with single banjo.

Similar to the Maddy Prior/Tim Hart albums from a decade later but less polished and with the gentle innocence and more 'homely' frailty of Shirley Collins's voice.

Lovely if you like this sort of thing.

Which I do.

An outstanding release here of the first two albums by Shirley Collins on two discs.
The digital re master sound is excellent and it is great value for money to get two albums together in one release.
Disc one contains the debut album Sweet England from 1959. They have also added one bonus track taken from a folk compilation called Folksong Today from 1955.
Disc two contains the second album False True lovers from 1960. Here they have added four bonus tracks. One is from a compilation called A jug of punch.1960 This is an early version of High Germanie. Next two bonus tracks come from a compilation called A pinch of salt from 1960. Finally there is a bonus track from a compilation called Rocket along 1960 and a track called space girl.

It is a shame, and I have to warn you that there is no original art work for the original albums or sleeve notes. The CD booklet just contains the one black and white picture of Shirley and inside pictures of other releases in the series by this company,

However with regard to the sound quality and content this is a great release and a good way to start a Shirley Collins collection.
Most of the songs are British Traditional Folk performed with banjo and vocals. Gentle sound with great arrangements and performance. This is a great release.

These two CDs represent a period in the evolution of the English folk scene which saw the emergence of many fine female folk singers: Sandy Denny, Maddy Prior, Jaqui McShee, Ann Briggs, Norma and Lal Waterson, June Tabor, Heather Wood and others. But Shirley Collins had, to my mind, one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices ever to sing folk music (Listen to Amaranth, No Roses etc). Here she is with voice and banjo (mostly) singing uncomplicated folk songs with uncomplicated musical backing (pre Dolly) – nothing slick here, just a beautiful voice singing folks songs beautifully. Any self respecting ‘folkie’ should want this double album to remind them of the joy folk music once provided. The recorded sound of both these CDs is excellent being clear and detailed.

Not much else I can say that new about the National Treasure of British folk music. A good value collection and a must for any folk musician.
