This has been very well-designed and when you pick up the package, it's an immediately impressive item. In a great-looking box, about 8" by 8" square and 2" deep.
Inside, the 7" vinyl single sits on top with the well-illustrated 20 page booklet on the history of Acid Jazz, (the record label) and a very nice 52 page hardback book with 25 years of artwork from the label.
There is an insert underneath these items which neatly holds the 4 CDs and DVD which are the main reason for buying this package. The 4CDs are "themed" and it's not just a random choice or dateline of the label.
The first CD is all about records "discovered" by British DJs in the 1980s and played in London clubs that started the Acid Jazz "scene" before the actual label formed. This was all about old school funk and what was called R&B, the first time around.
CD 2 is about dance music that was more recent than on the first CD - more contemporary to the scene in the late 1980s. The 3rd CD is probably the best though and most representative of the actual label called Acid Jazz - this is mostly live bands like Jamiroquai, Incognito, James Taylor Quartet, Brand New Heavies, Young Disciples etc. - who played the kind of music that DJs had brought to the Acid Jazz scene. So these bands released tracks on the label and formed a genuine musical movement. Weakest CD for me, was the last one which didn't seem to fit and is dedicated to music influenced by "substances". Stangely opening with a Paul Weller instrumental.
The DVD is much better and really showcases the best artists as well as the unique visual style of the label. All in all, this is a weird and wonderful collection, which gives you an idea of a diverse and eclectic movement/record label. Apart from the actual content which is mostly excellent, the style and design of this package makes it a very desirable object in its own right and I can see this becoming a real collector's item.
It's difficult to find fault with this boxset, it looks great, it's heavy, good quality and material inside is great listening too.
CD1 - Older tracks played at the club nights and that influenced the scene CD2 - Tracks from the era played at the club nights CD3 - The labels own big hitters CD4 - A chillout CD, mix of older classics and newer too. Lots of reggae, dub etc.
There's a huge display of talent and diversity here, so even if the plethora of hip-hop tracks sometimes tip the balance into "skip, next track" territory, it's not long until you're treated to a series of extended jazz grooves or spacey dub work outs.
Niggles? Just a few: - Really, only CD3 is an exploration of the label itself. The "back to mine" flavour of the other CDs wasn't always to my taste. - The BNH tracks on the 7" aren't included on any of the CDs. It would've just made things simpler to have them there, rather than ripping the vinyl oneself. - The DVD of promo videos doesn't include a play all feature, which I was dumbfounded at to be honest and means it will only ever get a single spin as I could far easier watch each video on youtube etc. A playlist feature would've been nice and is pretty much a standard really, silly omission.
As I said, all only niggles - When presented with such a cracking box set lovingly put together it's difficult to complain about the small stuff (although obviously I just did!)
Great box set!! Probably the best I've ever seen/heard! Anything is nearly perfect...music, images, graphic, any little side of this box is a treasure! Great job from the guys of the Acid Jazz label, a must for any fan!
A beautifully packaged dance through the label's catalogue book-ended by the inspiration for the sound and some more recent releases. A very high quality product from a label that continues to release only high quality material.
this is a wow product , 6 cds and a DVD , and a 7inch single , by incognito , never been released before , warning ! think this is just another box set ? well it weighs a ton , and is the size of a big box of chocolates , recommend
