The prospect of revisiting ELP classics with refreshed scores, new arrangements, full orchestra and rock band sounds like a turn-off but I must say this works wonderfully well. The original dynamism and excitement of the originals is maintained, particularly with 'Tarkus' and 'The Endless Enigma', but I do miss Greg Lake's vocal presence. There is a certain loss of rock heaviness, so this is 'ELP-lite', but the quality of the compositions shine through, the musicianship is excellent and it's a fun listen. The orchestration is superb and use of the full range of instruments is clever and works well. I found this a most satisfying listen with the volume cranked up, or through headphones if your neighbours don't appreciate the works of ELP. The more I listened to this, the more I liked it. Recommended.
Having been a massive fan of Elp it was a fantastic surprise to find this album on Amazon. It lead me onto Keiths work with Marc Bonilla which I knew nothing about. It was brilliant to hear these old Elp works re arranged for orchestra and band and it all works very well. Fans of Keith Emerson and Elp will love this as will anyone who appreciates classical music. Wish there was the option to give 10 stars.
Being a 55 y.o. a ELP fan, this cd has been a beautiful discover of the undoubtable talent of Keith Emerson, great composer and great musician! Thank you Keith for your works: they have been the real soundtracks of my first 55 years and they'll follow me again and again!!
I honestly thought after the 2010 farewell ELP High Voltage concert that would be it from Keith Emerson, how wrong I was . This album is brilliant and reminiscent in parts of Works Volume 1; linking a fine sounding orchestra with Emerson and sometime partner in music Mark Bonilla, my only question is why didn't Emerson (or ELP even) do this years ago. The Endless Enigma Pt 1 and 2 are a delight and shows what might have been in 1977. Tarkus also relishes a new lease of life, though i'm personally not keen on some of the guitar work: too much distortion. Of the new tracks After All of This, Walking Distance are great but the best bit is its all high quality music none of this sounds like fillers to me. What a fantastic live concert this would be. Can't wait for the next album. If your an ELP fan who liked it when the orchestra was brought into the mix don't wait a minute and if you just like Emerson at the piano its also a treat. Great album thoroughly recommended. And now even better news this is to be played live at the Barbican London 10 July 2015.
