Although on the surface it's much like most party songs about binge drinking, it's actually a very clever piece of social commentary with an extremely catchy hook. Lyrically the song presents our misguided attitude towards alcohol of wanting to get wasted. As ever with Kendrick Lamar there's witty word-play throughout the song ("All the girls wanna play Baywatch" "This is parental advice, so a-PARENT-ly I'm over-influenced by what you are doing"). For an in-depth analysis see rapgenius.com Sonically the song does more than it needs to, which is why I hold it in such high regard. The intro mimics the sound of swimming in a pool and surfacing. In the chorus the words "dive in it" are intonated downwards creating a falling, with the final word drowning out.
