TOP 100 REVIEWERVINE VOICEon 6 September 2012
Paul Desmond (1924-1977)is well known as the alto saxophonist with Dave Brubeck and his quartet and for composing their greatest hit, "Take Five". He was also one of the most popular musicians to come out of the West Coast's "cool jazz" scene. During his time with Dave Brubeck he also did his own projects and this set has 2 such albums. In addition to his work with Brubeck he led several of his own groups and did significant collaborations with artists such as Gerry Mulligan, Jim Hall and Chet Baker.
This 2 CD set presents albums from 1959 & 1957. "First Place Again!" has Paul Desmond; Percy Heath double bass; Jim Hall electric guitar & Connie Kay drums and was recorded in New York in September 1959. The album is a mix of standards and jazz compositions. The second album is the earlier "Blues in Time" and the line up is Paul Desmond; Gerry Mulligan baritone sax; Joe Benjamin bass& Dave Bailey drums. This album was recorded in Los Angeles in August 1957 and is a mix of compositions by Desmond; Mulligan and the standard "Body and Soul" and allows the 2 sax players to explore the full breath of the sound. Liner notes are by Not Now Music regular Peter Gamble and this is another great addition to their already huge jazz back catalogue. Great sound quality and excellent value. Total running time approx 88 minutes.

This CD is part of the excellent Not Now Music label 2 for 1 series. It contains:

First Place again with the following line-up:
Alto Saxophone – Paul Desmond,
Double Bass – Percy Heath,
Electric Guitar – Jim Hall,
Drums – Connie Kay.

The second "title" album is more complicated. Originally released as Gerry Mulligan/Paul Desmond Quartet it was later repackaged as Blues in Time. This quartet consited of:

Alto Saxophone – Paul Desmond
Baritone Saxophone – Gerry Mulligan
Bass – Joe Benjamin
Drums – Dave Bailey

Both albums are top drawer stuff. They can be bought separately with bonus track, the former with the bonus track Susie and the latter with: Tea For Two, an alternate take of Wintersong and two takes of Lover, which are good but the essential albums are contained here and for people wanting to build a classic jazz collection this series of albums is a boon

If you, like me, are a fan are a fan of Paul Desmond's laid back and gentle style, you are sure to enjoy this double CD. CD1 features Desmond on alto sax, Percy Heath on double bass, Jim Hall on electric guitar and Connie Kay on drums. CD2 features Desmond and Gerry Mulligan on alto and baritone respectively, Joe Benjamin on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums. Disc 1 is my favourite which best showcases Desmond's unique style. At the price this is a super buy, even though I will rarely play disc 2, this is still great value for money. Sound quality is very good considering the age of the recordings, particularly on disc 1. The discs are nicely packaged, which at the price is a bonus, and so for Desmond fans and lovers of cool jazz, this is a must buy and delivery was next day.

This is a cracking cd, which I bought on impulse, along with others due to its astoundingly low price. I love Paul Desmond for his subtlty and delicacy, and this showcases it well.

For me he is the ultimate smooth player of his instrument. His work with Dave Brubeck was legendary. He has left us much musical pleasure.

Good luck for your sales.
