Who Pays The Ferryman is a fast-paced and thrilling tale of betrayal and revenge.
It starts with the middle-aged hero, Alan Haldane, taking stock of his life and realising that he needs to return to the place where the big moments of his life had all been played out:-Crete. Crete is defined as a land held in trust for the past and it is the past which continues to dictate what is happening on the island. Alan is recognised as Leandros on the island because he had been part of the Andarte freedom-fighters but feelings still run high there about deeds that had been done in the past. Love is there in abundance but in Crete there is also hatred and death. You can really feel the clash of cultures, with the old peasant Cretan ways colliding with the new reality of a more modern Crete and also the struggle within Leandros himself. He is still trapped within his past and his earlier actions and the more he struggles to free himself, the more entangled he seems to become-and the Ferryman is always waiting. A mesmerising read!
