A dazzaling reinterpretation/reinvention of a masterpiece. I will admit that I originally approached this with some trepidation, I mean The Four Seasons is one of the great masterpieces, surely trying to 'recompose' it was hubris in the extreme; but it works. While clearly recognisable as The Four Seasons it is also clearly different and hugely enjoyable.
Special mention must be given to the stunningly wonderful performance by violinist Daniel Hope and you can't help but wonder how well this would have worked without a musician of his caliber.
Note - If you can, get the version with the DVD the 5.1 soundtrack just makes things that much more involving.

What a beautifully uplifting recomposition this is! It's a rare thing to find something that competes on a totally complimentary basis with the original and I bet Vivaldi would have loved it! Richter takes phrases from the four concertos and uses them to vary harmonies and create a wonderful effect of coming out into the sunshine. There is a minimalist tendency to it, but surprises too. The Shadows series needs careful listening, but the musical connection is clearly there and the turbulence is cleverly offset by the birdsong. There is masterful control in the orchestral playing which moves to build the tension pouring out of Daniel Hope's masterful violin playing. Make no mistake: this isn't easy. It's music for the whole family; several times I've had friends and family to the house when this CD's been playing. Uniformly I hear them ask: "What is this gorgeous music?" Buy it. you won't regret it.

Don't expect The Four seasons as we know it here. But this wonderful version of it recomposed by Max Richter is simply breathtakingly beautiful,
and Daniel Hope plays it to perfection. Like so many others, I know this Vivaldi piece so well and have several in my collection, but I am always
keen to hear another take on a well known piece, whether it be written for a different instrument, or as in this case completely recomposed.
From the moment I first heard this CD I found, and still find it compelling listening. The accompanying notes, although not long, do give a fascinating
insight into the mind of a modern composer.
