This is an intense album of intricate pieces, quite unlike the bravura speed of Rodrigo y Gabriela or the stately classics of Bream/Williams. This is thoughtful, intelligent stuff that bears close listening and I suspect i will still be listening to it in years to come.

I bought this after listening to the preview tracks. It hasn't disappointed. It is a very atmospheric and personal record and it has been on my repeat listens for the last few days.

Sr. Montón is a Catalan guitarist who was previously unknown to me. According to the label's web site, he was invited to make this record after some outstanding work accompanying the singer Amina Aloui.

Following (mostly) the standard flamenco forms, this album — in particular, the tone and use of dynamics — sounds extremely classical to me, and it's interesting to see this alluded to on the web site.

None the less, and somewhat to my surprise in view of this, I liked it. The material is inventive and interesting without sounding weird.

The Air is "based on J.S. Bach" — yes, you guessed it: the one "on a G String", from BWV 1068. For me it's the weakest item on the menu, but even so I wouldn't call it a dud track.

In addition to one of the performer, the booklet is padded out with more full-page photos (such as one of a bucket on a rope, and another of a rather alarming-looking ladder) that are presumably Artistic, but to me convey nothing whatever. Your mileage may differ.

Note to ECM Records: track-numbers, flamenco styles and track-times could advantageously be shown in the contents-list on the case, as well as in the depths of the booklet.

I recommend this both to fans of modern flamenco, and to classical-heads who only make the occasional excursion.

The total time is 59'15".

I don't quite understand why I like this album. You could argue that it's a bit too tasteful and there are a couple of tracks which sound too "easy-listening" for me, and yet it also has moments of raw intensity, a soulfulness to the playing, that makes me want to keep playing it over and over. It is beautifully recorded, as you'd expect from ECM.

This is a really lovely CD with some great guitar music - I bought it without knowing the musician - and fall in love with his music! Will buy another one of these for my father who is a guitarist as am sure he will love it as much as I do!
