Fascinatingly weird 'live' album
on 31 October 2015
Another fine Zappa production from the mid-1970s with the crazy Captain Beefheart on board for this (mostly) live collaboration. There are a number of impressive tracks here including the likes of 'Carolina Hard-Core Ecstacy', Advance Romance' and the superb 'Muffin Man' (featuring what is generally regarded as Frank's finest ever guitar solo) and, although I generally prefer Frank's studio based projects, this is more enjoyable than the likes of 'Sheik Yerbouti'. As ever with Zappa, there are large dollops of weirdness (some of which are inspired and others just plain silly) but, musically, his backing band, The Mothers of Invention are really tight and always worth listening to. Prepare for a roller coaster ride!!
