This review is for: 80s Groove 3 (Ministry Of Sound 3CD)
As the music here is mostly very well known, I am not reviewing the music itself. These are classics that filled the 80's dance floors, so you can't go wrong. Ministry Of Sound churn out these types of compilations because they are always in demand. The music speaks for itself. My review instead focuses on the content. You never can be sure with these type of compilations what versions you are getting. Soul/Dance music from this era came in multiple versions. Often the 7" single, 12" single and album would have versions quite different from each other. So here I have compiled a track list with my notes so you know. This is a good compilation to get a lot of great music in one package, but if you have a lot of this already you may be more interested to know which mixes these are, which is the main focus for my review.

Ministry Of Sound have done a better job with this series than some of their other compilations. There are gaps between the tracks on this CD, where often they buffer the tracks too close together sometimes with jarring edits between tracks. But I still feel there is scope for improvement on the selection of tracks. Some of these are on so many compilations that surely everyone has them by now - for instance, this is now the 17th compilation I have with Cameo's "Word Up" on! It would be nice to have seen one of their other hits like "She's Strange", "Candy" or "Single Life" instead. Also, there should be better quality control when selecting the best sounding versions. One track is particularly bad quality here: Sharon Redd "Never Give You Up". The right hand channel has really bad hiss making it sound worse than a vinyl record. It is really not nice to listen to. This track really needs to be re-mastered because it is also bad quality on her album issued by Unidisc (the company this track was licensed from). Ministry Of Sound should reject this type of quality and instead select a better sounding version or another suitable track instead. All the time Unidisc can get away with selling this poor sounding master they will continue to do so. I know that some of the masters Unidisc license that are poor quality are also available with better quality on overseas CD's, because I have tracked them down, so better sounding masters are out there with a bit of extra effort made. This is just laziness. The focus for Ministry Of Sound appears to me to be more on getting a track list that reads well and sounds good for TV advertising rather than optimum sound. There is a hotchpotch of different versions here, sometimes the 7", sometimes the 12" or album version. It's not very consistent and I could definitely put together a better sounding product. There is one HUGE error here that just goes to prove they don't pay close enough attention to what they are doing: Evelyn King "I'm In Love" is not the vocal version. It is an INSTRUMENTAL version by mistake. Oops! Someone isn't paying attention! Where is the quality control?

Disc: 1
01. Alexander O-Neal - Criticize (4:03 7" single/album version)
02. Michael Jackson - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (4:20 7" single version)
03. Lionel Richie - All Night Long (All Night) (4:19 7" single version)
04. Cameo - Word Up (4:20 7" single/album version)
05. Gwen McCrae - All This Love That I'm Giving (3:54 7" single version)
06. Midnight Star - Midas Touch (3:54 UK 7" single version)
07. Steve Arrington - Feel So Real (5:07 album version)
08. The Whispers - And The Beat Goes On (3:26 7" single version - this is good because usually the version used on compilations is a version that fades just as a verse starts. This is the proper 7" mix)
09. Farley "Jackmaster" Funk & Jesse Saunders Feat. Darryl Pandy - Love Can't Turn Around (3:42 edit - This is not the 7" version. It is a bad edit which has no intro and comes straight in with the chorus, after the break when the build up back into the song comes it immediately fades, so rather unsatisfying)
10. Alyson Williams - Sleep Talk (5:26 7" single version/album version - This was always surprisingly long for a 7" single. It seems more like 12" single length, but it is not as long as the 12" version)
11. Gwen Guthrie - Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But The Rent (3:27 7" single version)
12. The Pointer Sisters - Dare Me (3:43 U.S. 7" single version)
13. Donna Allen - Serious (3:45 7" single version)
14. Shakatak - Down On The Street (3:16 7" single version/album version)
15. Mac Band Feat. The McCampbell Brothers - Roses Are Red (4:07 U.S. 7" single version)
16. Loose Ends - Hangin' On A String (3:40 7" single version)
17. Change - Searching (3: 40 7" single version)
18. Dennis Edwards & Siedah Garrett - Don't Look Any Further (4:04 7" single version/album version)

Disc: 2
01. Chic - Everybody Dance (3:58 edit - Longer than the 7" single, possibly the album version faded)
02. Diana Ross - Upside Down (3:37 7" single version/album version)
03. Kool & The Gang - Get Down On It (3:32 7" single version)
04. Sister Sledge - Lost In Music (3:24 7" single version)
05. Shalamar - I Can Make You Feel Good (4:14 12" version/album version)
06. George Benson - Never Give Up On A Good Thing (3:42 - The album version is 4:05. My overseas 7" single is 3:58. So either this is faded early or is the UK 7" version - I'm not sure. I suspect it is the album version faded early)
07. Oliver Cheatham - Get Down Saturday Night (3:54 7" single version)
08. The Temptations - Treat Her Like A Lady (4:17 - seems to be the album version faded early)
09. Booker Newbury III - Love Town (5:16 12" version/album version)
10. S.O.S Band - Just Be Good To Me (5:07 - shorter than the 5:37 7" version, presumably faded early)
11. Mary Jane Girls - All Night Long (4:06 - slightly longer than the 7" version, presumably this is the album version faded)
12. Juicy - Sugar Free (4:34 album version)
13. Jackson Sisters - I Believe In Miracles (2:58 7" single version)
14. Rick James - Super Freak (Part 1) (3:24 7" single version/album version)
15. The Jacksons - Walk Right Now (3:32 - The UK 7" is longer by a minute. This version is the short 7" version used in the Netherlands which sounds quite a bit different to the UK version)
16. "D" Train - Music (4:44 U.S. 7" version - The full 12"/album version is over 8 minutes and best heard in this version. This is the 4:44 U.S. single version which is the same as the album but just fades out. The UK single version was shorter at 3:59 and labelled as "Music (Part One)", continuing on the B-side with Part Two. In America there was no continuation on the reverse, because there was a different track entirely on the B-Side).
17. Heatwave - Gangsters Of The Groove (4:02 7" single version)
18. Frantique - Strut Your Funky Stuff (5:45 12" version)

Disc: 3
01. Luther Vandross - So Amazing (3:42 7"/12"/album version)
02. Sade - The Sweetest Taboo (4:37 album version)
03. Womack & Womack - Teardrops (3:53 7" single version)
04. Carly Simon - Why (3:33 7" single version)
05. Cherelle with Alexander O-Neal - Saturday Love (5:00 album version)
06. Anita Baker - Sweet Love (4:24 7"/12"/album version)
07. Gladys Knight & The Pips - Taste Of Bitter Love (4:37 12"/album version - This track is punchier in the 7" single version which can be found on the Big Break Records reissue CD of Gladys Knight & The Pips "About Love")
08. Jermaine Jackson - Do What You Do (4:47 album version)
09. Imagination - Music and Lights (3:42 7" single version)
10. Evelyn King - I'm In Love (3:32 INSTRUMENTAL - The version included here is an instrumental version rather than the original vocal mix! Luckily I have the vocal version on another CD, but that is really poor to put the instrumental version on. Where is the quality control?)
11. Hi-Gloss - You'll Never Know (4:43 - this is the same version featured as "Radio Edit" on the Unidisc CD of the Hi-Gloss album "You'll Never Know". It is not the original 7" single version. It is actually an edit which is like the single version with the longer album instrumental intro)
12. Skipworth & Turner - Thinking About Your Love (3:41 7" single version)
13. Sharon Redd - Never Give You Up (4:08 7" single version - This is not good enough quality for a CD. It needs re-mastering).
14. Odyssey - Inside Out (3:45 7" single version)
15. The Pasadenas - Riding On A Train (4:15 7" single version)
16. Billy Ocean - Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car (4:44 - There are two single versions. There is a short 4:10 edit and this 4:44 version which includes the full intro from the video with the car ignition starting. This is the version also featured on "The Very Best Of" Billy Ocean)
17. DeBarge - Rhythm Of The Night (3:48 7" single version/album version)
18. Atlantic Starr - Always (4:00 7" single version)

Oh gosh, that took a LOT longer than expected! I hope it helps someone :)

Unless you want specific tracks here, I would point you in the direction of 100 Hits: Disco or Disco Fever, both of which are far superior to this collection.

The discs contain the correct tracks (the music on the discs agrees with the tracks which are listed, both on the CD sleeve, and on our web site).

The error appears to be with Windows Media Player, which displays incorrect tracks.

Unfortunately, we have no control over Windows Media Player software, nor are we able to correct any errors which it may have.

4 stars just. Volume 3, like 1 and 2, is a very decent collection of songs. No doubt will bring back many happy memories for some. As with the first two, is spoilt a little by all the stocking filler tracks, as there is some really top draw other material.

although not strictly all 80s grooves it takes me back 35 years to when I was running disco's in the local scout hall. This is number 3 in the series and there must be plenty of tracks to select to make a 4th, I hope so. If they need some help in compiling another come and have a look in my loft at the boxes of coloured vinyl 12" records for some ideas. Fantastic, more please...great for the car. turn the volume up and those Saturday nights with the light boxes and stobing light seem like yesterday. Where have those years gone.
