Excision is a film that you will either love or hate. There doesn't seem to be an in between. It'll never be a huge hit as it's probably quite hard to market. It's not a horror movie, nor is it a thriller, comedy, or teen drama, yet it encompasses all of those genres and probably a few more.

It's about a high school girl, Pauline, who is a bit of a loner and slowly descending into a dangerous world of make believe. It's not a happy-go-lucky tale. What she needs, is someone to look out for her and take an interest. Sadly, her mother is a little preoccupied with her own life and her dad just does what he's told by her mum, leaving her to her own devices.

There is a strong horror element in the film, but it's psychological horror, drawn from her fantasies as she slowly descends deeper into her psychosis.

There aren't many films that are like this, or if there are, I haven't heard of them, therefore it's quite difficult to liken this film to any other.

If you're in the mood for something which is a very grisly affair, mixed with pretty much every other genre, give this a go. It's an indie film and it always will be, but everyone gives a good enough performance to elevate it to a cult film.

Okay first of all this isn't a bad film in fact I really like it. It's deeply disturbing (the story of a teenaged girl with a constantly scathing mother and terminally ill sister who fantasises about blood and torture) but it isn't scary. I suppose if I had to describe the plot line I'd say it's the gradual descent of Pauline's descent into depravity the climax of the film shows her performing her 'first surgery' transplanting a neighbours lungs into her terminally ill sister to try and save her and the film closing with her mother hugging her for the first time in the entire movie and them both screaming and looking on in horror.

In terms of gore it's filled with it but all in Pauline's fantasy or dream sequences and they aren't the traditional 'axe to the head' scenes they're very artistic and surreal, similar to A Clockwork Orange for example one of the scenes envolves a woman with blood stained hands, bold smokey make-up approaching a body as if she's about to perform surgery she puts her hands inside the carcass all the while being carressed by two topless women and a man and pulls Pauline's severed head out of the corpse by the hair, the final shot shows Pauline's severed head staring and licking her lips.

If you like arty films this is a good choice but if not or you're looking for something with a deeper plot or spooks than avoid. Think A Clockwork Orange meets Hannibal.

TOP 500 REVIEWERon 23 October 2014
AnnaLynne McCord stars as Pauline, a disturbed high school misfit who has delusions of becoming a surgeon. Dominated by her over bearing mother, Pauline battles with her sanity and unhealthy obsessions.

Superb, a teen based horror that’s pungent with everything from necrophilia, growing pains, peer pressure, sexual anxiety, parental strife, mental illness and horror – real horror. Writer/director Richard Bates Junior does a brilliant job of filling an 80 minute movie with so many thematic smarts but never once over egging his bloody pudding. He gets excellent performances out of McCord and Traci Lords (as Pauline’s mother), whilst the blending of surreal imagery via Pauline’s dreams and the real world awkwardness – with some dry humour in the mix too – produces a picture that is in equal parts oddball and emotionally shattering.

When Dead Ringers collides with Ginger Snaps, Excision will stay with you for days afterwards. 9/10

Pauline is a young woman who lives with her family and her younger sister Grace who has Cystic Fibrosis.

Pauline has some delusions of being a great surgeon, and she also has some horrific dreams that she finds stimulating to say the least.

Her family put up with her delusions and her school classmates find her annoying.

But as this is all happening around her she has a plan, a plan that will leave them all shocked, and some people may not survive.....

Every now and again, you get a really bizarre release that separates audiences, many becomes something of a cult thing, to say that this is one of those movies is like saying to someone it gets dark at night.

From the upstart, it's got a really psychedelic, 'May' feel to it, and although there are parts that are truly hilarious, there are also scenes that really repulse, and the film gives you that guilty, dirty feeling whilst watching. It's not an ideal film to watch with a loved one.

Saying that though, it's a fascinating journey into someone's delusions, someone who thinks they are superior to the majority of people, and eccentricities are garnered from her parents struggles and possessiveness of their youngest.

Lords, is brilliant as the mother, and has a 'Carrie' vibe to her portrayal.

Dream sequences are sublime, and full of connotation regarding sexual orientation, and repression.

It's a hard film to recommend, but if you like extreme cinema, you will find a good addition to the Sub-Genre, but something distasteful, and really pushing taboos and boundaries.

I think the director is very pleased with the outcome..

Really enjoyed this movie. Hard to catoragize though. Elements of horror though not scary, quite gory in parts. I would say it's more of a comedy. Although a very dark one at that. Annalynne McCord is excellent. Though she looks like a zombie from start to finish. Still give her one😜

Wonderful horror that makes AMERICAN MARY look embarrassingly commercial.
I saw this when it was first released and its an odd film, our protagonists awakening is driven by blood, like a cutter thinks. The films enthralling and somewhat hypnotic in a weird way. Her actions are subtly ruthless and the ending, both satisfying, surreal and horrific.

Very odd film. Entertaining. The main character is very well acted. An awkward teenager who's life seem to be half situated in bizzare fantasies. Tracy Lords as her mother seems a bit wooden in her acting to me, but this does not detract too much. Despite the strangeness of this film and occasionally rather horrific parts, it has humour as well. Don't expect it to go down well with the average romcom fan though.

Excision is a fairly unique movie,it manages to be genuinely twisted and dark whilst maintaining a nice black humour and a strange, charming quality throughout. The lead actress is a big part of this in my opinion,as I thought she was incredible in what was undoubtedly a challenging role to take on...it's a feat she pulls off so naturally it's pretty amazing to see.
All the rest of the cast are stellar and play their parts perfectly, keeping the very interesting story going superbly,I was fascinated to see it all unwind.

Excision is probably not for everyone,as it is more of a character study than all-out action/gore etc,it's a film with a very strange and intoxicating feel, but if you're into films with different and strange stories, which aren't "by-the-numbers",then I highly recommend this one.

I really enjoyed Excision. Very original, very stylish and a truly stunning performance from AnnaLynne McCord. The gore is restrained and stylised, the casting is sublime, Traci Lords is fantastic and there are a few brilliant cameos. If anything, there might have been an ejection of a different type of energy around two thirds in but on the whole this was a great surprise and a great movie.

this was something of a surprise, i didnt think it would be this excellent, this film is depraved, its sick, its gory, its intelligent, the acting is flawless and at 81 minutes there is no messing about. The film is dark, is it a dark comedy? i dont think it is as its darker than mud but i loved it, i will be recommending this to everyone from here on.
