It takes a certain kind of brave and twisted person to turn his life and body into an S & M performance piece. Bob Flanagan is both sick and brilliant. Flanagan survived cystic fibrosis until the age of forty-two - a very long time. He attributes this to constantly inflicting pain on himself relentlessly over the years. His dominatrix partner Sheree, helps him with is goals. The various scenes are sometimes spliced with dark humor and other times simply shown in their bleak gruesomeness. There is nothing that Bob and Sheree have not done to him to inflict pain in the most disgusting ways possible. It's an entirely different world and it takes a strong stomach to watch. Bob specializes in abusing his penis in ways unimaginable, including a scene with a hammer, a nail and a board - there is blood. The most amazing part of this documentary is when Bob and Sheree take this 'performance art' to various museums in New York and Los Angeles. Bob allows himself to be raised by his feet, pierced, shackled and naked, high above the museum goers heads. It is disturbing. If you have an interest in the S & M/bondage world, you might find this interesting, but the scenes are so graphic and sometimes overwhelming in their intensity, it can be hard to stomach. This is a perplexing film.

I was drawn to this movie mainly by curiosity: I expected it to rely solely on the shock factor and expected to be completely grossed-out by the scenes I had heard about.
Bob Flanagan was an artist who suffered from cystic fibrosis (CP). Sufferers from this condition usually don't live past their late teens, but Bob survived until the age of 43. In this movie the viewer sees how he copes with his illness, but not from a medical point of view: Bob has become an adept of SM in order to take control of his body and for once master his sufferings.
While the movie is undeniably gross, it does contain a deeper meaning which is more evident than anyone would possibly expect. It is also a fun documentary since Bob had a great sense of humour.
Ultimately you watch Bob's death in his hospital bed and it is hard not to be legitimately saddened with the departure of a person whose creativity and sense of humour were daring and ground-breaking.

Have wanted to see this dvd for ages [ believe I saw Bob on some arts prog years ago] but this isnt an easy watch .It really makes you question your attitudes to illness/ disability/sex/fetish and what is kink to one person really seems weird to another . Bob managed to turn his body into his art and to fight against the sterotypes of being a pain victim .I really will remember some of the scenes for a long long time .

This is the kind of DVD that you don't 'stumble' accross, I suspect if you're here you know what your looking at.

This is a film, made by Bob and is partner, recording there life dealing with Bobs Cystic Fibrosis. He was one of the oldest survivers of CF. Along with breathing troubles, CF often causes chronic pain and Bob found this one of he more sever symptoms. We all find ways of dealing and he found his in a very unusual place! He talks about, from the age of 13, hanging him self from doors all night long in order to feel pain .. in a sexual way.

We hear from his family and friends as well as hear from him and his parter, they all talk about how they felt about Bob's way of dealing with pain.

With shots of exactly what his CF meant for him, as well as footage of him and his partner practicing their S&M, this film might shock some people who are not already aware of what 'sexual pleasure from pain' means.

It is still a fantastic account of his life, of how his art came from his CF and how his partner, and their S&M, kept him going for so long.

Bob was an amazing man and a true artisic talent.

This film is better, sicker, funnier, weirder, eye-opening, insightful, thoughtful, provocative and daring than I originally remember. I recommend it to anyone interested in people.
