I 'won' this book at the Orcrime 2012 festival (but had already put it on my wishlist) and I read it immediately. Perhaps hearing Denise Mina talk about the problems and development of this book enabled me to be sympathetic to the point of not noticing any disjointedness, and accepting the brief appearance of Paddy Meehan, but ultimately I was left with a considerable sense of being in the hands of a writer who could tell a gripping story and, as happened with 'The End of the Wasp Season', manipulate her readers' emotions and expectations so as to give them a thought-provoking and reverberating shock at the ending.
