This is a good album, but unexceptional in many respects. Plus points: highy original, some of the ideas were new and fresh at the time, the drumming is brilliant (and 'hypnotic'), the guitar work very angular and interesting, ditto the bass-playing. It is entertaining in its weirdness. Now to the negatives: rudimentary vocals (fun nevertheless), basic chant-like lyrics, a distinct lack of songcraft after Paperhouse (that's one of the points I guess), and ideas stretched very thinly over 17 minute 'songs'. This album marked the birth of a completely new, wholly European style of rock music, so hordes of critics claim. Did they not notice the pentatonic blues-orientated scales and string-bending during 'Oh Yeah'? I like this album a lot, but its originality and importance are a tad exaggerated and over-intellectualised.
