Fast enough as a primary HDD for most day-to-day desktop uses
on 20 November 2017
This drive is #1 in the SATA HD category for a reason. I've been buying Western Digital since building my first PC in the mid 1990s. This line is fast (for a mechanical drive), has bags of storage, is virtually silently, and comes from a brand that has been pioneering drives for decades.
I opted for the 1TB model; since then, I see they've added up to 6TB, which should keep you going for years. The first Western Digital I ever bought was something like 0.5 GB, and was double the price of the 6TB model. Moore's Law at work!
I'd recommend this drive for long-term storage, or even as a primary drive for budget rigs. If you're doing heavy IO or you want/need things to have a more 'instant' snappiness, then a SDD will serve you better. However, for day-to-day use, this drive should be plenty fast enough for your needs, especially if you have a decent chunk of RAM.
I use this as a primary drive for a Windows 10 machine with 16GB RAM; most applications still load 'instantly' because all operating systems these days are smart enough to cache frequently accessed apps in volatile memory so they're not hitting the HDD as much on reload. It's an ideal drive if you're on a budget, and there's tons of space.
Tip: If you're currently thinking about a lower sized drive, I encourage you to explore the bigger options. Occasionally, you'll find that a bigger drive is actually *cheaper*. At the time of writing, for example, a 1TB drive is around three quid *less* than the 500GB. Look before you buy!
