When The Sun ~ track 11 of this superb 80-minute compilation ~ bursts from the speakers, it really is like the sun bursting through clouds. It instantly became one of my favourite reggae songs, up there with Jimmy Cliff's Many Rivers to Cross and The Harder They Come, or Bob Marley's Misty Morning and Stir It Up.
Burning Spear/Winston Rodney could be called the Al Green of reggae {or maybe the John Tams if you're a folk fan} as he possesses a haunting voice of rare soulfulness, a 'voice in the wilderness' if you like, or from a deep stone well. Once heard it is not easily forgotten.
This is a blindingly good selection, with all the expected tracks ~ Marcus Garvey, Man in the Hills, Tradition, Door Peep, Social Living, Throw Down Your Arms, and the potent Slavery Days, along with thirteen other songs, occasionally Dub versions of their originals.
The exemplary booklet notes are by Ian McCann, from whom I always learn something. This is a bargain, and an essential purchase for anyone remotely interested in reggae. Burning Spear was and is one of Jamaica's unique voices, perhaps in the end its most plaintive, yearning and moving.

There is dark matter here, but often enough the sun bursts through . . .
