I've had an "unofficial" copy of this album for several years, but this official and remastered release is a welcome addition to the Durutti Column catalogue. For various reasons (the sleeve notes offer an explanation) this album was never released at the time it was recorded in 1983, due in part to a dispute between record labels; in the early '80s, The Durutti Column were releasing each new record on a different and more obscure label.... So this album has only existed as a bootleg among avid fans. For my money, it's a better album than the contemporaneous official releases, "Another Setting" and "Without Mercy", with which "Short Stories for Pauline" shares some similar themes and sonic textures.
