The Mulligan Concert Jazz Band must surely be one of Jazz's Seven Wonders - the near perfection of their live performance here at Santa Monica being another wondrous example of what they were capable of. These 2 CDs cover whatever was left out of the (now deleted) Mosaic Box Set and fills the gap admirably. The tightness of the arrangements and the standard of musicianship is an audible joy to behold. Was there ever a Band so near perfect in the presentation of their misic than this one ? Listen and be transported back to a time when Mulligan was king (or at least one of them). The CJB was short-lived and therefore under-recorded. Get this little gem while you can.
1.cd 1: 8tracks almost 58 min.; cd 2: 11 tracks almost 64 min. A complete live concert. 2.Personnel: Don Ferrara, Nick Travis, Conte Candoli tp, Willie Dennis tb, Alan Ralph btb; Bob Brookmayer vtb, p; Gene Quill as,cl; Bob Donovan as; Jim Reider, Zoot Sims ts, Gerry Mulligan bar,Gene Allen bar, bcl; Buddy Clark b, Mel Lewis dr. 3.Arrangements by Gerry Mulligan,Bob Brookmeyer, Bill Holman, Johnny Mandel, Al Cohn. 4.Awesome good music by an inspired band, with great solos by i.e. Gene Quill, Zoot Sims, Conte Candoli, Bob Brookmeyer and the master himself. Even the blues tracks will keep your attention. 5.This music is also a good match with the CJB on the Kings Of Jazz labelled lp on You Tube. 6.Very recommended. Price-quality ratio is beyond good. However a five star rating is very exceptionnel by me, this release becomes that verdict.
Having spent an evening at a concert in the Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica I can certainly validate the superior sound capabilities of the building which was for many years the home of the annual Oscar ceremony. In 1960 Gerry Mulligan was recorded in concert in October of that year. The personnel includes many of the now legendary jazz artists of the time. The music on offer covers 19 titles from standards to new compositions and the sound captured is early stereo at its best. Fresh Sounds have been on the go for decades and they have a huge catalogue of material with many jazz and orchestral albums reissued.
This 2CD collection is superb, consisting of over 2 1/2 hours of great music by this comparatively short lived aggregation and 13 previously unheard titles,I would go so far as to say, this is probably the best of the Concert Jazz band CD's,although the best "Blueport", featuring Clark terry is on another CD,
Anyone familiar with the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band will need no urging from me to snap up this very welcome Fresh Sound double CD release. The band's complete concert at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on 1 October 1960 is attractively packaged and enjoys excellent sound thanks to the work of the legendary Wally Heider. Only six of the 16 tracks (not counting the three brief versions of the theme) were previously released on the wonderful Mosaic set of all the Verve sessions from 1960-63. Given the relatively few recordings of this famed big band this release is indeed a treasure and highly recommended.
Excellent concert. I had three tracks on a 1960s LP, and the "complete" Mosaic set of the band added 3 more tracks. Now, it turns out that there are 19 tracks. (The entire concert.) Why did Mosaic miss 13 tracks?
