This is proof that the major labels still have the means to pull a rabbit from the hat. The Nielsen violin concerto ranks along with Sibelius but does not draw the performers or performances it deserves. The fabulously gifted Norwegian Vilde Frang delivers an account of exquisite beauty and dramatic tension captured in a state of the art recording. A greater surprise comes with the Tchaikovsky. So much competition, starting and ending with Heifetz in my experience, but the young lady sweeps the board and makes it her own domain. If you like the 19/20 Century Violin Concerto this disc will please you. Amazon delivered the CD right on the release date and on a price-reduced basis applied to pre-orders.

This is a wonderful disc played with verve and tenderness in turns. In the Tchaikovsky, I would put this performance right up there with the best. The orchestral contributions have just the right balance and the soloist is quite marvellous. The drawback is that the use of the cuts in the finale which were traditional when I first listened to Heifitz on 78s seem so unnecessary in the days of Cds and downloads. I do hope that these forces soon re record this work complete.
The Nielsen, a composer who I love but a work that I had only heard once is a revelation. This is a slightly unusual work, somewhat more serious in nature than most violin concertos. The first movement acts as an introduction and is alternately grand in a mock baroque way and tender, these contrasts are not overplayed by the performers but seem really well judged. The following "cavalier" allegro struts its stuff in a very convincing manner. The Intermezzo starts, rather surprisingly with the B-A-C-H theme with the tender violin softening the mood which leads into a playful finale. For those who do not know this work, I would thoroughly recommend this performance and the Tchaikovsky is glorious but...

If you ever get the opportunity to hear Vilde live then take it! If not this is the next best thing.
