I immediately became one with the main character and needed to keep reading to find out the mystery of her story.
The characters were tantalisingly descriptive and you could smell and hear them at every page. The ending is not predictable. The book is bursting with every human emotion and I very much look forward to the next book by this author.

I really enjoyed reading this book; a real page turner - hard to put down. It was very thought provoking, sad and yet compelling, especially the chapters relating to Martina's visit to Auschwitz (possibly because I visited Auschwitz with my family about three years ago). I would recommend this book; an excellent read!

I couldn't put this book down - a great tale of girl's journey into adulthood. I loved the narrative structure, the nostalgia evoked by the setting and was haunted by the ending for weeks. Highly recommended!

What a great book this is. Totally real, believable build up to a Jewish family's life and the truth will shock you with its indictment of our baser instincts, that flourish when permission is given.

A wonderful story of tragedy and healing, of the impact of one woman's suffering on her world and her family. The story is well written and engaging.
