One to watch if you are interested in the goings on of revolutionary groups in London during the late 19th century. I am biased because Patrick Malahide, who is a hero of mine, plays the assistant commissioner of police who thinks before he acts, and who has an endearing love for his wife. This isn't one for the person who likes action or lots of violence, but if you are looking for a well acted play, then this is the dvd for you.

Joseph Conrad's novel is titled The Secret Agent: A Simple Tale. What I enjoyed about this BBC production is how it focuses on the not-so-simple characters.

The Assistant Commissioner (played by the always excellent Patrick Malahide) is an especially engaging character. He juggles his career, friendship, marriage, and duty to the public with a smooth finesse that belies his complex situation. He is easily my favorite character.

David Suchet's performance as Verloc is also very good. If it weren't for the accent, it would be hard to believe that this sad, shambling character is played by the same fellow who has played Hercule Poirot for so many years. Warren Clarke and Peter Capaldi also shine with their very fine performances as Chief Inspector Heat and Vladamir.

I recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys period drama and intrigue with strong characterization.

Beware of this 2012 dvd, which for some reason has been severely cropped to a 4:3 ratio so that part of the frame on each side is missing. This matters, because it's one of the strongest and sharpest of responses to Conrad's novel, and gorgeously cinematic. Unless you're buying this for the Dutch subtitles, go for the 2016 rerelease (of the David Drury/ David Suchet version) where you get to see the whole frame. (Misleadingly, it's still listed on the box as 4:3.)

Excellently acted by the very able cast. This is a movie which I first encountered some years ago, and was delighted when I saw that it was available on DVD. I had no hesitation in placing an order for it. My request was dealt with very speedily and efficiently.

I was the DoP for this but it was never released on DVD. Transfer could have been better but at least I now have a copy after all these years. Thank you Alec.
