Philips Lead

I needed a charger to replace the original, which suddenly stopped working after many years' service. I eventually chose this one which is described as a Philips product. However, it's definitely not the same build quality as the original, as can be seen in the photos. The original had a very flexible coiled lead that was easy to manage, and the shorter plug pins designed for the UK market. The replacement has a non-coiled lead that's quite springy and less easy to manage, and the longer plug pins designed for non-UK use. However, the charger does easily fit my particular shaver socket and so far charges my Philips 3000 series shaver without any issues. It doesn't need the charger stand mentioned in the product description. Knowing that many replacement chargers (particularly for phones) are potentially dangerous, I would have bought an exact copy of the original from a known reputable source but couldn't find one. The Philips website was of no help to me. I would have second thoughts about using this charger without the added protection against electric shock provided by a shaver socket.

I bought this shaver lead to replace the original coiled lead of a Philips HQ7100 shaver.

The shaver-lead appears to be a Philips-branded product, made in China. It comprises a transformer built into the head of the lead where it plugs into a razor socket.

1. The transformer has only two European-sized pins that are intended to plug into a razor-socket only, not into a British (or other) 3-pin socket. To use in any 3-pin socket would be most unwise, even dangerous. Most razor adapters (British/European) are likely to accept this transformer.
2. The transformer runs cold during normal shaving use, a measure of good design, and is also quiet of itself. (Ie, not including the noise of the razor unit.)
3. The lead is not coiled, and rather too long for convenient use - the lead keeps flapping about, and can easily become knotted during storage between uses. However, there is a tie-bar attached to the lead, and you can use this to coil up any unwanted lead and tuck it close to either the transformer or the end that connects to the razor.
4. I've had no trouble with this shaver-lead for the past four weeks or so since buying it.
5. I can confirm that the shaver-lead functions correctly with a 115 volt or a 230 volt AC input, both on my bathroom wall.

This isn't a standard UK shaver plug (the pins are too long and too thin, with slightly the wrong spacing). As such it doesn't fit into a UK shaver socket (at least not into mine, some may be more tolerant of non-standard plugs).

This item is mostly useless in the UK, since it doesn't fit our sockets. I've given it a couple of points, it may be fine for people in mainland Europe who are (for reasons unknown) ordering from the UK site or if you're prepared to use a 'visitor to the UK' travel adapter with it.

The product shipped works and appears to be a genuine Philips part, but it is for an EU electrical outlet (narrower pins, further apart) and not a UK shaver plug as depicted. It does fit with a bit of force but it's not the right plug for the socket so might cause damage or not make a reliable connection.
