Amazingly good. Streams Netflix & LoveFilm too!
on 23 October 2013
Boot up time is nice and quick, even from full power down, under 10 seconds.
It takes under 5 seconds from insertion of a disk to start to play, DVD or BluRay.
It streams Netflix & LoveFilm (if you have an account, and it's easy to link them to the player if you do, like I do.)
There are also a whole host of free to view streaming channels that you can access once you register it with Sony. BBC-Iplayer, Demand5 and so on.
It also has a built in web browser, though I suspect I will find the convenience of having a keyboard on my PC results in my not using that function much.
Setting it up was was as easy as I could wish, and it asked to update once I had finished, which took under 5 mins.
No doubt I will have to adjust the factory defaults over the next few days to get it right, as Netflix defaulted to full-screen on my 16:9 1080P TV when viewing older programs filmed in 4:3 making all the actors look short and fat....
The built in WiFi works, but only managed a connection speed of 1.5Mbps to my WiFi router over a distance of under 5 meters with no obstructions. I dug out a 5m network cable, ran it to the player behind my other stuff, and plugged it directly into my 1Gbps Desktop switch that is also wired directly to my connection to the internet, and got 30Mbps+.
IF you want good network speed plan to hard wire it to your LAN, as the WiFi is marginal at best.
Overall 5 stars, I never expected the built in WiFi to be any good, so it was not a disappointment that it was as poor as expected.
The only minor issue I have is that the volume for DVD's, BluRay's and streamed content differ. All streamed contend is LOUD, all DVD's are in the middle, and all BluRays are quiet. If I watch a BluRay film (adjust the volume accordingly) and then the next day go to love film and stream something it's hideously loud. Always. SO I have to turn the volume down lots on the TV. Put in a BluRay the next day and it is too quiet to hear.
The device should allow for the fact that three different formats (seem to) have a differing "base-line" volume setting, and allow me to adjust them individually.
