Not your average sci-fi film
on 14 February 2014
I watched "Paul" with no preconceptions; I think the last sci-fi film I saw was "Close Encounters". I've never seen "Shaun of the Dead" etc., but after "Paul" all that will change - these guys are hysterical.
The film follows the misadventures of two English sci-fi geeks on their trip of a lifetime to a sci-fi comic convention in the U.S.A. and a follow-on road trip where they hire a recreation vehicle (camper van) to do a tour of the main UFO hot-spots (Roswell, Area 51 and so on). They do the usual geeky things at `Comic Con': eyeball all the other fans that have come dressed as characters from books and films and pay to get to speak to a famous writer who wears a `trademark' black hat, is really up himself and is incredibly rude to his fans.
Right at the start of the road trip, though, the guys have their own, unplanned, close encounter with an alien (Paul) who is actually more down-to-earth than anyone else in the cast (possibly due to his constant use of `recreational' drugs). Along the way, they meet Government agents determined to capture Paul and a reactionary fundamentalist Christian and his repressed daughter who won't accept anything that isn't in the Bible - even when it's right in front of them.
