An excellent camera for socialites...
on 23 May 2012
I must say that I was very impressed with this camera overall, given its low price tag - it has a wealth of useful features, performs very well under most conditions and takes bright well saturated 16MP pictures.
Straight out of the box the camera comes with a Quick start guide and a CD-Rom containing software for Intelli-Studio, remote back up of photos to PC and a full user manual.
The initial set up requires the battery and a micro-SD card to be fitted and the camera charged up. Make sure you have a Micro-SD card at hand to fit, or purchase an adequate one with the camera- it does not take standard SD cards.
First impressions of the camera were good - it is very compact, easy to use - even with my big fingers - and it has a vivid 3" LCD viewfinder on the rear. Samsung have also added a concealed front viewfinder display for taking self portraits. When it is not in use, you have to look very hard to see that it's there, it's so well blended into the camera bodywork.
Setting up the social applications was relatively easy - from the full manual it was easy to follow the instructions to set up the wi-fi key in the camera and then enter user data for Facebook and Picasa (it can also connect to others such as photobucket but these were the two I tested). Transferring photos was then almost effortless - it seemed to work pretty well.
Setting up the auto back up was also straightforward - this requires installing auto back-up from the CD-ROM then plugging the camera into the PC so that it can store details of the PC being used. Following set-up of this function, clicking on the auto-back up icon results in photos from the camera being transferred to a folder on the PC. No need to connect using a cable each time, a really useful feature.
Like the other reviewer I liked the micro USB for charging the camera - again it's great not having to remove the battery, find the battery charger and plug into the mains. Samsung have put a lot of thought into the design of this little camera and it shows.
The smart picture taking of the DVF 300 is impressive too - I took a large number of photos in different situations and was impressed how well this camera adapted to each situation and took sharp, bright, vividly coloured pictures that impressed straight off. Just in case you aren't happy with the choices made by the camera in smart mode, you can also select scene modes manually - this was again easy to do - Samsung have made the menu very intuitive to use and I didn't have to spend ages wondering where I had to go to find the scene selections.
The camera also has a 5X zoom feature which was adequate for most situations.
All in all I was impressed with the handling and responsiveness of this camera - and like other reviewers, I found the wi-fi features were a fantastic add-on for the camera in terms of convenience. The camera looks good, the build quality feels good and solid and the camera takes great pictures with minimal effort required on the part of the photographer. I couldn't really find much to fault with it and for anyone who is looking for a high quality camera with connectivity, that can be carried in a pocket, I would highly recommend this one.
