Will Oldham on Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
Format: Kindle Edition|Change

on 5 September 2012
I'm not sure if this will appeal to those who merely like Bonnie Prince Billy but for those like myself who listen to him on a daily basis it was almost perfect. It's constantly amusing and revealing without spearing daggers into the songs. It gives you information you never had but still allows you to wonder.

The whole thing about BPB being weird in interviews is also a myth. Many of the interviews I have listened to or read in recent years are quite similar to the way the book approaches things, in a conversational way. Perhaps it says more about the more mainstream magazines than the artist. In 20 years when the work is treated with the respect it deserves I am sure this myth will still exist.

Will Oldham is one of the greatest songwriters alive today, and if you are a fan of his music then you are aware that he rarely does interviews and details about the creation of his music and the creator himself are sketchy. The book is really an epic 400 page interview that tells the story of how Will Oldham got involved in music and acting and pretty much details every song and album that he has ever released. If you love the music you will not be disappointed with this book as the questions and answers are genuinely well thought out and feel organic compared with his other interviews.

Hard going unless you are in love with BPB. I almost am, but not quite enough to get past half way in this meandering love fest.

I've had this on pre-order for a while and was very glad to see it arrive the other day.

It is a must for any BPB fan as Will Oldham discusses all aspects of his musical and acting career to date. In fact at some point through the interviews he must talk about nearly every song that he's recorded.

During the interviews Will reveals the inspiration behind many songs and albums, how they evolved and who was involved, together with information about his approach to the recording process. Of course it's not just dry facts for musos about record production, you get to understand Will's outlook on music, films, touring, work, family etc. as well.

The book is split into eleven chapters and pretty much covers BPB's career chronologically. Extras include a short introduction by Alan Licht, illustrations by Magnus Johnstone (who also did the cover for 'Arise Therefore' and 'Wai Notes'), a discography and a strange timeline that starts off with Captain Cook discovering surfing in Hawaii.

Any downsides?...well, not really, though some photos might have been a nice touch.

Will Oldham and Alan Licht discuss the former's fascinating career.

The sexual tension is palpable throughout.

The only time I put it down was to fetch more tissues.

I've grown to enjoy most of Oldham's output, and have always been curious about his mentality from which he has created such an anomaly of a discography. This book has great insight to the in's and out's of his a career, a fly-on-the-wall conversation with a friend.
