Proverbs: Wisdom That Works
Format: Kindle Edition|Change

on 3 June 2014
In preparing a series on Proverbs this along with Waltke and Tremper Longman III have been my go to commentaries. The strength of Ortlund is the way he preaches Christ from Proverbs and applies the proverbial text to the modern individual, world and church community.

This is currently my favourite commentary on Proverbs, and, reading it, I felt that Ray Ortlund was truly excited about the book. There is nothing stuffy about it - it's just warm and accessible. The introduction is excellent, and helps the reader to get excited about reading it too - and most importantly, helps us know what to do with Proverbs, and what it means to take it to heart. He gives very helpful guidance for how to get into the mindset of Proverbs, and Wisdom in general.

My only disappointment was that the end wasn't as helpful as the beginning! There is lots of material on chapters 1-9, but very little on the rest - and hardly anything at all on chapter 31, which is such an important part of the book.

What is included, however, is very good!

Having spent some time in the book of Proverbs over the last two years, I was glad of some of the insight this commentary gives. Ortland does well at drawing the reader's attention to the text and has some helpful insights to offer. However, this is not the commentary to turn to if one is looking for depth or broader discussion of this book's place in the canon. Additionally some of the examples and applications given were at times a bit simplistic. Nothing I disagreed with though: sound and prayerfully written from a man with a pastoral heart.

This is an excellent book on Proverbs, theological and down to earth, powerful and practical.

If you are not a preacher don't be put off by the fact that it's written for pastors and preachers, it's easily accessible and would be of great benefit to anyone who reads it. It will make Proverbs come alive to you.
