Both contain fine singing and orchestral playing
on 8 February 2018
This disc comprises two masterworks of Pergolesi; the 'Stabat Mater' (Emma Kirkby, James Bowman and the Academy of Ancient Music directed by Christopher Hogwood), and the 'Salve Regina' (Andreas Scholl and Les Talens-Lyriques directed by Christophe Rousset). Both contain fine singing and orchestral playing, and to be honest you're not going to go far wrong with such a line-up of world-class artists. The quality of the performances leaves little room for serious criticism, but the one glaring irritation is the paucity of any proper 'sleeve notes'. 'Superficial' would be over-generous for what is provided with this disc. I'm ashamed to admit that, thanks to the quality of information found in so many CD booklets, I've developed a somewhat over-inflated sense of entitlement. Heavens! I'll be voting 'Labour' next......
