An entertaining read. The trials and tribulations of a bookseller told in a wry, laconic way.

Bill Rees quotes Holbrook Jackson in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Book Runner. He says that books are the `...most excellent and noble creations of Man...' If that's also your belief you will be attracted by Rees' odyssey through Britain and France searching out books to buy and the lengths he will travel, the odd people he will schmooze, in order to sell them on. Rees has to be dedicated to books to do this job because there's no money in it. Though sometimes he reports a decent profit on a rare book (he often feels guilt from making money on a previous owner's ignorance), I was mostly wondering how Rees pays for his petrol. The diary-like entries, randomly dated are chaotic, but if you love books, it's fun chaos and worth a scan.

Discovering this elegant memoir of Sisyphean struggles in the book trade is like 'finding B.S, Johnson's Trawl in a box of Mills and Boon', as Rees puts it. Gentle humour gives way to detached irony as successes and failures in the south of France and North Wales take on the intensity of doomed love affairs, and we are left entranced by this tale of addiction.

This book has stood the test of time and is a great listen. Of course I am biassed by nostalgia for the time but I have found it a much better read than when I was younger

A delightful book, I read it avidly - a lovely mix of road journey and the quest for great books - funny, moving and exciting - highly recommended

I thought I had purchased "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" and was surprised by the mistake. Very boring book
