Many years ago I heard part of this music and it made no impact on me although I am keen on Britten's music in general. A recent performance in Manchester of a suite from the ballet by the Halle under Mark Elder really kindled my interest and was the reason for purchasing Britten's own performance. The live performance was a thrilling experience and the music for Act 2 in this recording caught something of the feel of the live performance; a profound contemplative stillness. I have yet to get inside the first and third acts, but this recorded performance is very good and well recorded. A friend of mine did music at A-Level and she studied Britten in depth. She had never heard of The Prince of the Pagodas so it is not particularly well known. But for those of us who, in spite of advancing years, want to get inside something new and learn from it, it is strongly recommended.
