TOP 500 REVIEWERon 23 June 2007
This is an audio CD recording of one of the best TV music specials ever made. I remember watching it on TV when it was first shown and recorded and watched it over and over and over. Recorded live in front of a studio audience the atmosphere is electric and so is the playing.

To pick highlights is very difficult because its all great. But for me the rare appearance of George Harrison is an absolute treat. Eric Clapton plays some truly blistering guitar solos, that put all the other guitar players into the shade, and Carl Perkins admits as much himself. Dave Edmunds, who was the musical director for the show puts in a rare appearance as well. Other guests include Ringo Starr (Honey Don't), Rosanne Cash (Going to Jackson) and a cracking session band who keep the whole thing rocking all evening.

However it is Carl Perkins who is the star of the show and its great to hear him in prime form. If you like 50's Rock 'n' Roll and a hint of country than this is well worth getting.

Not to be missed it's as if you were there yourself at this fabulous gig. Carl Perkins and his friends at their best - especially Clapton. Don't hesitate to buy, you will love it. Excellent in every respect.

The recording of this assembly, dating back from 1985 and put out the same year, was reissued in 2009, and there's now a DVD available of the same. It brings together original rockabilly legend, now the late Carl Perkins, ably supported by a host of more recent great guitar exponents in the shape of Dave Edmunds, Eric Clapton, and perhaps the most talented of the Beatles,George Harrison. Vocals suitably provided by not just Carl, but all the others plus Roseanne Cash doing a Johnny and June number. Ringo is there too, joining in by attempting to both sing and play the drums, and in my opinion he can't do either. He's the only downside of this run through of all the standard material that Perkins started out with on Sun, but it all comes over as a great jam session, very reminiscent of 'Matchbox' in which Perkins also once did at a charity effort coupled with Duane Eddy and the Mavericks. If you grew up with this sound and still live with it, then this is an album you'll enjoy, even they get it a bit wrong sometimes.

Listen to Mean Woman Blues and hear Eric Clapton play 2 of the most incredible solos he may have ever performed.

It's 2 mins 34 seconds of sheer genius that leaves me breathless

Eric Clapton was a very odd choice for a rockabilly concert. He doesn't display much evidence of being familiar with real rockabilly.
